An ode to the rivalry between men and nature, Taming the Garden is the story of how a powerful man indulges in an unusual hobby by having century-old trees uprooted in communities along the Georgian coast and transplanted to his private garden.

Aya is growing up with her mother on the island of Lahou. Joyful and carefree, she enjoys picking coconuts and sleeping on the sand. However, her paradise is doomed to disappear under the water. As the waves threaten her house, Aya makes a decision: the sea-level may rise, she won’t leave her island.

“A Serra do Roncador ao Poente” narrates the original myth of the Xavante Indians who inhabited the central western region of Brazil. The main protagonist is Diogo Juruna, who guides us through places where rock drawings by the Xavante tribes have survived until today. The paintings materialise the spirits that come to their defence when “civilization” again turns on them and their land. The moving episode of the death of Colonel Pimentel Barbosa, in 1941, is counted by the Xavante people. The language and the land consolidate the importance of the culture and the warlike posture of the rituals displaying courage and firmness.

In an isolated Yanomami land in the Amazon, the shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomani tries to keep the spirits of the forest and the traditions alive, while the arrival of gold prospectors brings death and destruction to the community. Young folks are charmed by the goods brought by the white; and Ehuana, who sees her husband disappear, tries to understand what happened in her dreams.

Uniquely structured upon the personal storytelling of native West Virginians, Devil Put The Coal In The Ground is a meditation on the suffering and devastation brought on by the coal industry and its decline. From the realities of a crumbling economy to the ravages of the opioid epidemic, to the irreparable environmental damage and its tragic impact on human health – the film is a cautionary tale of unfettered corporate power, and an elegy to a vanishing Appalachia.

Since the 2000s, humanity has been confronted with at least one new infectious disease per year. 70% of them are zoonoses, diseases transmitted from animals to humans. In the movie we follow French comedian Juliette Binoche across four continents. She meets “disease ecologists”, they study the links between the modifications to the environment and the emerging of infectious diseases. They show that this “pandemics epidemic” is caused by the acceleration of biodiversity collapse due to human activity.

A man writes letters during the pandemic. He spends his days in a grove that grew in the ruins of an old factory. As he recalls childhood, he reflects on the transformations the city went through, the asepsis and control that grew. The break allowed him to discover a wide variety of plant and animal life near his home. At the heart of the grove among autochthonous, exotic and invasive plants that live together and new birds that arrive every day he makes the most unlikely discoveries, develops new ecological theories, and reflects on the future.

In the “Black Summer” of 2019/2020, Australia had some of the worst bushfires in its history. The meteorological satellite Himawari-8 observed this catastrophe from the far distance. For this experimental animated documentary, terabytes of satellite data were processed with specially developed algorithms, combining visible light and infrared measurements with heat detection. Animated, the rendered images form a hypnotic stream, documenting the catastrophe like never seen before. The work is presented as a short film or a multi-channel video installation.

This film unites the stories of one-by-one fishing communities around the world. It highlights the deep relationships between these communities and the ocean, as the source of their livelihoods. Fishers in these regions understand the rhythms of the ocean and the imbalance caused by industrial overfishing with unsustainable methods. For the past 25 years, thousands of Maui’s residents and visitors have come to volunteer at Auwahi, a storied forest on the leeward side of Haleakela volcano. By their efforts, Auwahi has gone from being a “museum forest”, a handful of centuries-old ancestor trees in a cow pasture, to a vibrant young forest where a critical part of Hawai’s biota has sanctuary.

The last few years have been marked globally by a pandemic... and on a personal level by a vegetable garden. When leaving the house was not advisable, seeds became imperative. And so grew, more and better, the garden around which our protagonists lives happen at home. Amaia and Carmen are, together with their pets, characters of this story starring the vegetable world.

Born from a reflection on current climate issues, Gaïa is a powerful short film that relates our past mistakes and invites us to act. The 10-minutes cartoon film THE SAUSAGE RUN tells the tragic story of a little lamb with the help of multiple Zoetropes, loosely based on the well-known Grimm’s fairy tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. The roles of the humans and animals are exchanged. The human characters in the film are depicted as anthropomorphous animals. The animal in the story, the big bad wolf, is here a human being. ‘Little Red Riding Hood’s family consists of the mother sheep, the lamb as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and a grandfather sheep. The forester and his wife are dogs with a soft spot for sausages. The wolf, a butcher, is a man with a serious problem - he has run out of meat. The story takes place in Zoetropes, which are historical optical and rather primitive devices that display sequences of drawn images in motion. It’s an invention from the 19th century and a forerunner of film technology.

At a time when over-deforestation has escalated the effects of global warming, a desperate old man looks for a shade where he can take shelter and rest in the scorching heat, but no object has a shade other than a lonely tree he encounters. When he approaches the tree, he realizes that the shade of the tree is full of people. There is not enough space for him.

CarboNostrum, Climate-Smart Agriculture in a Changing World, is a European project with the objective to provide educational/training resources to empower smallholders, young and new agricultural producers with the best possible tools and knowledge to apply climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions in poor and degraded lands of Mediterranean ecosystems. To achieve it, the partners met for a Cinema Workshop in Istambul and made these collective good practices film at Farge Organik in Turkey.

Environmentalists are warning us about the desertification of the soils. They say this is an agriculture that contributes to further accentuating water management problems.

Pupils in the 8th grade students of the Navegador Rodrigues Soromenho school in Sesimbra, Portugal, immerse themselves in aquatic activities through an ocean literacy programme that involves human development, freediving and ecological education tools. By exploring dreams within its local community, the pupils’ environmental conscience is awakened and deepened.

Just 30 years ago, dense schools of hammerhead sharks and giant rays made the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California a global diving location par excellence. And a prosperous tourist economy was created in the city of La Paz. But in the 1990s, the indiscriminate issuing of shark fishing licences allowed multinational fleets to transform this sea into a critical habitat for these animals.

A story that uses memory to map out a future of changes from the female point of view. The film accompanies the path of Shirley Krenak and Maria Zelzuita, women on the front line in the fight for land in Brazil. Shirley’s mission is to honour the women and wisdom of the Krenak Warriors, from the region of Minas Gerais. Maria Zelzuita is one of the survivors of the Eldorado dos Carajás Massacre, in Pará, and both their journeys explore the concept of violence and appropriation of the female body.

Isolated in the Amazonian tropical forest, a community of children live in profound unison with the surrounding nature. Amidst the waters of the river Pastaza and the tree tops, these children live their daily lives almost autonomously and with a strong sense of collaboration.

This documentary is the result of 15 years of filming by Pedro Aguilar, trained in the Fine Arts and working in the field of curatorship. Over this decade and a half, he fostered an ever-closer relationship of trust with fisherman António Escaleira. In a solitary process entailing enormous effort and passion, he documented the art of fishing, the voyages out to sea, the craft and everyday life of this man in the village of Azenha do Mar. The intertwining view of a city man in relation to a man of the sea who lives in a fishing village, above all narrates the story of profound companionship between two friends.

There is little in common in the lives of Luziane, Cristiano and Bianca beyond the fact that they live in the same small town surrounded by soja plantations in the interior of Brazil. Although they don’t know each other, the three are affected by the disappearance of Madalena. In different zones of the town, each one of them finds their own way to respond to this absence.

Old hills are falling gradually into the earth. And, without protest, they once again turn into simple ground, as if they had not sheltered generations of people ploughing, sowing, reaping, kneading and eating the fruit of centuries-old work. ‘Sortes’ tracks the life of the remaining inhabitants and their animals, spread around the Serra de Serpa.

Immersed in the blue, his interior time dilates and his soul marvels. This ritual leads to a profound connection with the island, and when reaching adulthood, the decision to stay and live a life of ancestral simplicity. He found himself in this foreign land. His home is in these depths.

In the Alentejo there is a village that conserves its ancient art of pottery production. In São Pedro do Corval, several characters linked to the centuries-old art of pottery relate their stories that derive from earlier generations, places and the transmission of knowledge.

‘Labuta’ takes us to Ribeira da Barca on the island of Santiago, in Cape Verde, where for several generations sand extraction was the only source of income. It is left to the women, the chief carers of this territory, to feed and bring up their children and grandchildren, and therefore it has been these women, above all, who have undertaken the sand mining. Today, the demand for sand has fallen because the activity has been banned in addition to the introduction of crushed rock sand in the Cape Verdean market.

In 2020, unable to travel to Mozambique, Ico Costa asked Ailucha and Domingos to film their everyday life using a camera that the director had left in Inhambane the previous year. The camera acquires a special presence in the group, recording adolescence, work, play, wandering, singing and dancing, desire.

Faced with the disappearance of her mother, Isabel finds in the reconstruction of her gestures a possible explanation for her fleeing.

‘Beans, Rinsed Twice’ relates tales, stories, memories and recipes tied up in a bean. How many stories can a recipe tell? And who do these stories belong to? The “O salto do contrabando” documentary, by Paulo Vinhas Moreira, is the result of three years collecting and mapping memories linked to smuggling and illegal emigration in the council of Sabugal. It reflects the realities experienced first-hand by the people of the region, with a completely unique and genuine identity. The goal of the project was to materialise these memories, affording the people a depiction and identification. The idea is that it will be the starting point for new artistic approaches that can in some way add more value to such a singular and genuine identity.
