A small air bubble trapped in ice millions of years ago possesses valuable information about past climate and analysing it provides direct data on when they were created.
Global warming is causing accelerated fusion of Arctic ice, the Greenland mantle and the most vulnerable regions of Antarctica, altering their habitats, ocean currents and the climate worldwide.
In listening to our earth’s glaciers recede in a disturbing silence, we are witnessing a change with no return, as each disappearing small ice particle slowly takes us one step closer to uncertain alteration.

O LADO NEGRO DO AZEITE
(O LADO NEGRO DO AZEITE)
Sandra Cóias and Pedro Rego, Portugal, Documentary, 2021, 31’
Placed in Portugal, where the sea finishes and Europe begins, there is an immense plane that occupies 1/3 of its territory: the Alentejo region.
It’s an Alentejo that today is experiencing a confused and conflicting reality. On the one hand, olive production has boosted the economy, but on the other hand it has given rise to huge territorial and environmental problems.
You don’t have to be an environmental expert to realise, when arriving at Fortes, that life there is impossible. It’s difficult to breathe. The smoke dominates the lives of those who remain there, preventing them from having a dignified existence. The increased production of olive oil leads to waste disposal problems. The more olive pomace is produced, the more factories pop up to dry this by-product and consequently more villages have to endure the problem of unpleasant smells and toxic fumes. An alternative to this process is available, it just requires will and political courage!
It’s time to think about the solutions and return the joy of life to this region’s people!

The “Ephemeral” short film was shot in 2020 on New Year’s Eve. It symbolises an innocent look of hope in a unconfined future, free from the Coronavirus pandemic.

VERBOS DOS ARGUINAS
(VERBOS DOS ARGUINAS)
Paulo Leitão, Oliveira do Hospital, Portugal, Documentary,2020, 16’
“O verbo dos arguinas” (The lingo of the arguinas). The picturesque, typical and humble “slang” or “jargon” created and used by the arguinas, stoneworkers of Nogueira do Cravo and Santa Ovaia, was essentially for the purpose, over the years, of communicating with one another without others, especially their boss or a stranger, understanding them. It is an act that shows the spirit of solidarity and professional embodiment that was dominant amongst them, which was why for many years the disclosure and public translation of this language was prevented, to keep it secret.
