SESSÕES ESPECIAIS 2023
5 of october | 21h30 | CineTeatro
Opening session | Extra competition exhibition
“CineConcerto FILMar ”, performed on the piano by Filipe Raposo

This session especially designed for CineEco brings together films where the landscape and human presence are portrayed by cinema. The music of pianist and composer Filipe Raposo is the common thread throughout narratives of speculation, interpretation and perception of the ways of observing, retaining and portraying physical, natural and geographical bodies, which over time also document the memory that cinema has helped to invent.

In the set of films, of special note is the dialogue between SERRA DA ESTRELA (1921) and MATA DO BUSSACO (1919?), a rare and mysterious film of which very little in known, apart from the fact it is a document produced by a pioneer of Norwegian cinema, Hans Berge, who travelled to Portugal towards the end of the second decade of the 20th century, and which was found one year ago in the archives of the National Library of Norway, one of the FILMar project donor countries.
The following films will be screened:
> SERRA DA ESTRELA (Raul de Caldevilla, 1921).
> MATA DO BUSSACO (Hans Berge, 1919)
> TOSQUIA DE OVELHAS NO PAÚL DA SERRA, MADEIRA (Manuel Luís Vieira, 1937)
> LAGOA (Filmes Castello Lopes, 1929)
> A INDÚSTRIA BALEEIRA (João César de Sá, 1932)
> NAZARÉ, PRAIA DE PESCADORES (Leitão de Barros, 1929) original song by Filipe Raposo (2020)
With the exception of NAZARÉ, PRAIA DE PESCADORES, where Filipe Raposo plays a musical score he himself wrote, commissioned by the Cinemateca Portuguesa (Portuguese Cinematheque) in 2020, the soundtracks of the other films are unreleased compositions. The film MATA DO BUSSACO is presented in collaboration with the Nasjonalbiblioteket (National Library of Norway) and the Norsk Film Institutt (Norwegian Film Institute). This session is supported by the FILMar project and organised by the Cinemateca Portuguesa Museu do Cinema (Portuguese Cinematheque Cinema Museum) and put into practice by the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage, within the scope of the EEA Grants European Financial Mechanism 2020 2024.

“Verdes anos , maduros anos : 1963 2023”
Isabel Ruth, João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata.

CineEco returns to the classic founding film of the new Portuguese cinema, Paulo Rocha’s Verdes Anos (1963), playing it in a double session alongside Onde Fica Esta Rua ou Sem Antes Nem Depois? (2022), directed by João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata.
In this new film, the two directors allow themselves to be guided by the cinematographic eye and planning of Paulo Rocha, observing “successive geological, urban and social layers of Lisbon”, and shooting in locations of the city under siege by the pandemic. The same shots, the same scenes, the rurality of the capital urbanised into new avenues. Half a century later, what Lisbon have we come to and what Lisbon do we see?
The 60-year commemoration of Verdes Anos is therefore celebrated through this fantastic work of art that continues to shape modern Portuguese cinema, as happens in this new ‘mirror film’ by two contemporary filmmakers.
João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata will attend the double session, accompanied by Isabel Ruth, the actress with an iconic presence in Onde Fica Esta Rua ou Sem Antes Nem Depois? and who plays Ilda in Verdes Anos.

A 19 year old boy, Júlio, comes to Lisbon to try his luck as a shoemaker. On the day he arrives, an accident brings him into contact with Ilda, a girl of the same age, who is a cleaner in a building near where Júlio works. As the film progresses, a romance between the two develops, felt more intensely by Júlio, whose jealously, exacerbated by what he perceives as a foreign and hostile atmosphere, leads him to constantly mistrust Ilda, which results in her breaking off the relationship. In an impulsive moment of rage, Júlio ends up killing her.

This copy is a digitally restored version of “Os Verdes Anos” (The Green Years) made from a new 2K resolution version produced by the original director. The transcribed material was the negative of 35mm image, onto which some shots have been integrated that had been cut out by censors, which were obtained from a 16mm copy that the director originally filmed for dissemination in Japan. The final version, which includes these excerpts, are in sync with the production of the version that had been analogically restored in the Portuguese Cinema laboratory in 2006, and approved by the director. The sound was restored digitally taking as the reference point the final mix of the optic sound negative but also recovering the partial magnetic bands of the atmospheric sound and music. In step with the collaboration initially provided to Paulo Rocha, the various stages of the restoration were carried out under the supervision of the director Pedro Costa, to whom the Portuguese Cinematheque Cinema Museum hereby expresses its profound gratitude.

From our window one can see a set of the film "The Green Years", directed by Paulo Rocha in 1963 . This was our starting point: guided by Rocha s gaze, we look back at the places of that film. The successive geological, urbanistic, and social strata of Lisbon, besieged by the pandemic that interrupted the shooting, are drawn out in front of our camera, like a contemporary jazz improvisation from a score written in 1963.
